Bareilly Ki Barfi trailer review: Bollywood’s obsession with love is promoting mediocrity

Out of all the things in the world, all the issues, all the fiction, all the history, Bollywood’s favourite topic of all time is a boy and girl falling in love. When Bollywood thinks to shake things up and do something different, it introduces a love triangle. The ‘fresh’ trailer of Bareilly Ki Barfi is exactly that.

Ayushmann Khurrana is playing Ayushmann Khurrana, a north Indian guy who is in love. After giving only one good movie in his entire career, you’d think he would take a hint, but no. Kriti Sanon has given us three expressions in total in all the movies she has been in. She is not doing anything different here, really. But perhaps the thing that hurt me the most is Rajkummar Rao. And not because he was bad in the trailer, he is actually the only good thing in it, but because an actor of his caliber is in a movie like this. When the most promising new actor of Bollywood is doing crappy romcoms, you know there is something wrong. Watch the trailer and you’ll know what I am talking about:

The movie is directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, who has previously directed Nil Battey Sannata, which gives me a little hope for the movie. Bareilly Ki Barfi is in post-production currently and will hit the theatres on 18th August. The music is plain and nothing new. We can just hope that the movie will actually be good and the talents of Rajkummar Rao and Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari don’t go to waste. Guess we have to wait and find out.
